Rovinj Food Landmarks: Plan a Seafood and Market Day

Two of Rovinj's seafood kitchens sit in the old town lanes, one steps off the centre at Ul. Augusta Ferrija, and the green market opens by Valdibora Square before the day warms up. Plan the market early, book the konobas ahead, and you have the food side of the trip settled.

Konoba Jure is the familiar name on Cademia ulica, a casual table for shellfish buzara, cuttlefish goulash and pljukanci with shrimp; finding the door takes patience. Konoba Veli Jože, on Ulica Svetoga Križa, is the slower tavern, with grilled meats, fuži with truffles and Malvazija or Teran, and in July and August you should book rather than stroll in.

Giannino, on Ul. Augusta Ferrija, builds its menu around the morning catch: order the seafood platter for two, ask about the day's fish, and request the terrace when you book. The Valdibora green market needs neither booking nor much time — about an hour buys figs, cheese, pršut and honey, plus a woven basket for carrying it.

Book the konobas before the summer crowd

Booking is recommended at Giannino, Konoba Jure and Konoba Veli Jože. For Giannino, ask for the terrace when you reserve; for Veli Jože, booking matters most in July and August, when walking in through the old-town lanes is a gamble. Konoba Jure sits on Cademia ulica, so securing a table saves you a search through the lanes on a busy evening. The Valdibora green market needs no booking at all — turn up early.
