Pula Food Landmarks: Fish Market, Olive Oil and Joyce's Café

Pula's food stops pull in two directions. Konoba Batelina, in Banjole to the south, and Chiavalon's mill in Salvela outside Vodnjan both reward a car and a little planning, while the Ribarnica on Narodni trg and Caffe Bar Uliks sit right in the centre where you can simply walk in. The order below puts the rewarding drive first and the easy city stops after it.

Book Batelina days ahead, bring cash, and remember it shuts for the first three weeks of August. Chiavalon pours free tastings at the mill, though a guided tour needs arranging, and the turn-off sits in open country, so keep the coordinates to hand. Expect a couple of hours there.

The fish hall is a working municipal market rather than a visitor attraction: whole Adriatic fish, squid and shellfish lie on crushed ice at prices per kilo, so ask before anything is wrapped, and come early for the widest choice. Allow 20 to 30 minutes. Finish at Uliks beside the Arch of the Sergii, where drinks are city-centre priced and smoking inside is the catch.

What to arrange before you set off

Konoba Batelina in Banjole asks for a booking days ahead, and cash is the practical note to carry. Chiavalon Olive Oil near Vodnjan recommends booking too: the mill tasting is free, but a guided tour is by arrangement. The Ribarnica and Caffe Bar Uliks need no booking at all, which makes them useful fillers around a fixed table.
